Personal Security
- Secure personal information in your home especially if you employ outside help, outside service work or live with roommates
- Find out who has access to your personal information at work, verify that this information is in a secure location and that it is disposed of properly
- Don’t give out personal information over the phone, through mail or over the internet unless you have initiated the contact or are sure you know who you are dealing with
- Guard your mail and trash from theft
- Keep your social security card and passport in a secure location
- Keep you wallet or purse in a safe location while you are at work
Computer Security
- Update virus protection software regularly
- Do not download files from strangers or click on hyperlinks from people you do not know
- Utilize a firewall, especially if you have high speed internet or an “always on” connection to the internet
- When submitting information online, look for the “lock” logo on the status bar at the bottom of your screen
- Try to not store personal and financial information on a laptop
- Delete personal information stored on your computer prior to disposing of it
- Read website privacy policies
